EAA Chapter 50
Keith Alves, one of EAA #50's members, and I were talking several years ago about airplane models. Keith told me about a group of people who enjoyed talking airplane talk, in addition to being some of the finest radio-controlled model builders in our area. Now that sounded like a group I would like to get to know. Keith told me the people met every Tuesday, rain or shine, at Ken Mohrman's home on Pitts Road located North West of Wellington, Ohio. Keith also told me the group enjoyed visitors and different ideas. What he did not tell me was that these people build "BIG" models and, as you can see in the pictures above, they are large. Some are quarter scale and some are scaled to fit the part that the builder had to start the project with. Take the example of Ken's latest project, his giant-scale Douglas A-26 B, which I think was eventually called the Douglas B-26 Invader. The scale for this bird was developed because Ken had a landing gear from a previous model which would work perfectly in his new project. After visiting this weekly gathering several times over the last year, I thought I would let the cat out of the bag and expose the location to others in EAA Chapter 50. The event is not a secret like the Manhatten Project was, but these guys good. There are already several EAA #50 members who regularly attend this weekly event. While I was there talking to Keith and the group, Don Roth walked in. Then came EAA #50 member Walter "Walt" Edling. Now, some of you may know Walt has a really nice RV 4, but today he brought with him his one-fifth scale Dornier. This airplane in full size has a 45 ft. wingspan but Walt's model has 9 ft. wingspan. She has two engines, one in tractor configuration and one located in the fuselage slightly aft of the wing, which drives a pusher prop. When the gear is in and the props are on, Walt thinks she will be ready to fly this summer. My ears will be open to the date when the little birdie says she will fly. Now for the rest of you, drop in! You'll be blown away. But be sure to take a package of cookies . . . that's the only way you'll get in the door!
